Soon after the millenium it was used as the heart of software for the specific purpose of automatic derivation of stereo depth distributions obtained from highly controlled stereo pairs of WebCams. Since 2009 the availability of high resolution digital stereo cameras (Fuji REAL 3D) should make this technique much easier (but not yet tried!).

More recently the vision software has been made available as a research package under the title ‘Simulated Human Vision’ (SHV Research).

Then most recently an additional facility has been added to convert stereo pairs of images directly into composite single images for viewing 3D depth on 2D surfaces with the naked eye (NE3D). However, this additional software is currently not available commercially.
