As a simple yet powerful demonstration, below are shown a small, high contrast star (left) and a highly magnified version of the same image showing the greyscale trends along the edge pixels (centre). To the right is shown the result of processing the star image using SHV, followed by supplementary processing to analyse the orientation difference trends around the profile. In the image on the right the local sub-pixel profile grey level represents the relative local curvature, being black for maximum convexity and white for maximum concavity. The whole plot is presented against a mid-grey background, with a ‘ghost’ of the star shown as a montage. The curvature data as output to file during the supplementary processing are quantitative and quoted to a fraction of a degree of orientation change per pixel for every pixel along the edge.
