The neural layer of interconnections between the receptors overlays the actual receptor matrix, such that the resulting optical diffusion produces image degradations of a similar amount to those of the refraction optics and, it is believed, progressively greater degradations away from the foveal region (see Chapter 2.3 of 'Vision and Acquisition').

The adjoining cross-sectional view of the near-foveal portion of an excised retina serves to demonstrate these points. It will be seen that the neural layer overlaying the retinal receptor layer rapidly thickens away from the centre of the fovea, while being already substantially thick at the centre of the fovea.
